A Three-Day-Adventure in Antarctica
On November 22, 2007 six Russians visitors, one South African guest and their guide Victor Serov from The Antarctic Company went for a three-day-adventure to Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. After a six hours flight from Cape Town in an IL-76 operated by the Antarctic Logistics Centre International (ALCI) they reached the Novo Runway.
All visitors enjoyed a comfortable stay in the guesthouse in the Schirmacher Oasis. The Schirmacher Oasis is an area of ice-free hills and partly frozen lakes 75 kilometres from the sea. The group paid a visit to the Russian Scientific Station Novolazarevskaya and Indian base Maitry. During 3 days trip the team explored the unique landscape of the Schirmacher Oasis and surrounding glaciers.
One of the highlights of the trip was a flight with two Basler Turbo 67 airplanes over the mountains of Queen Maud Land. The perfectly clear sky allowed a stunning view of the mountains which rise like carnassials above the smooth, white surface of the Antarctic ice cap. A landing at Ulvetanna (Wolf Fang) mountain allowed for a closer look at this surreal landscape. Tired but happy everyone returned to Cape Town.
