Get to know Antarctica and its Inhabitants
During this trip you will get to know the beauty of the Antarctic environment and its inhabitants. Escape from the crowded, bustling part of our world to the silent, seemingly endless dessert of pure snow and ice. Meet one of the most amazing birds in the world - the Emperor Penguin - in its natural habitat. Experience the harsh climate conditions, breathe the fresh cold air, enjoy the extraordinary beauty of the Antarctic landscape and get close to seals, penguins and other Antarctic birds.
Ski to the South Pole (from Filchner Ice Shelf) –
We start our expedition on the Fichner Ice Shelf, at about 81°20’S 040°00’W.
From the Antarctic coast our route traverses the Great Antarctic Glacier, which climbs from sea level to over 2800m at the South Pole, and covers terrain that is both mountainous and rugged. Typical terrain includes ice and constantly blowing snow, as well as occasional rocky areas. The patches of bare ice can be cupped, sloping, and highly treacherous. The weather is expected to include temperatures that range from -10°C to -35°C, with winds of up to 20 – 30 m/s. During the expedition we ski for about 7 to 9 hours a day, hauling sleds weighing 80-100 kgs. We expect the trip to take 50-60 days, depending on weather, snow conditions and group strength. The team will ski to the South Pole, with one possible re-supply en route and then be extracted from the South Pole once it has finished the journey. The Expedition members must be very fit and have cold weather camping experience.
Ski to the South Pole (Last Degree) –
A unique wilderness experience, the Antarctic plateau is like no other place on earth. With temperatures between -20 and -35°C the cold is ever-present but comfortably so in state-of-the art cold weather clothing and equipment. After flying from Cape Town, South Africa, to the blue ice runway at Novo Station in Queen Maud Land, we fly to 89 degrees south and ski the last degree (110km) to the South Pole. In true polar fashion, you tow manageable sleds containing all your food and equipment (approximately 40-50kg). The expedition will take about 10 days on ice.
You will experience twenty-four hour daylight so there's no shortage of time to really see and feel the true Antarctica. Average 15 kilometers per day to the South Pole where you are collected by aircraft and flown back to Novo Station and then to Cape Town.
Fly-in South Pole -
Fly to the Heart of Antarctica
Fly-in South Pole program gives you the opportunity to experience Antarctica and the South Pole in comfort.
Departing Cape Town, South Africa, in a specially-equipped IL-76 aircraft, you fly for about 5,5 hours over the Southern Ocean to the blue ice runway at Novo Station in Queen Maud Land. Here you will be escorted to your guest tent, have a welcoming meal and shown around the station environs.
You have plenty of time to explore and discover Antarctica over the next 3 days, including your flight to the South Pole, guided tours of the Russian and Indian scientific research station and walks in the spectacular Shirmacher Oasis.
The heated 'mess' tent is a haven where you will dine, enjoy many forms of entertainment and mingle with adventurers and scientists from all over the world. |
