Doug Stoup And Richard Dunwoody Reach South Pole Via A Virgin Route – Our Sincere Congratulations To The Team !!!
At approx 10.30am (GMT), January 18, 2008 an American explorer, Doug Stoup and Richard Dunwoody MBE entered the history book by conquering the Geographic South Pole, establishing a new route based on Ernest Shackleton's planned 1915 'Endurance' expedition.
This historic 1,089 km (570 nm) expedition took 48 days from the edge of the Continent (Shacleton Range area) to the Geographic South Pole was totally unsupplied.
The team has faced treacherous crevasse fields in the beginning, regular whiteout conditions, temperatures of minus 45 (wind chill) as well as altitude sickness and snow blindness.
One of the team members, James Fox, had to abandon the expedition on day 24 due to mental and physical exhaustion leaving Richard and Doug behind time and having to put in 30km days thereafter to make up for lost time and closing in weather.
The team will rest at the South Pole station for a few days before returning to the Russian Antarctic base Novo in Queen Maud Land and then Cape Town , South Africa en route home.
