GPR SYSTEM TEST IN ICELAND
This coming Antarctic season 2009-10 TAC is making one more step in providing safety to overland travel across Antarctica with vehicles.
We have purchased a 400-MHz ground penetrating radar (GPR) system and plan to install it on our 4X4 Toyota Hilux which was used last season to support the South Pole race expedition. The radar systems were successfully used by several scientific traverse expeditions and proved to be very efficient.
In October 2009 The Antarctic Company in co-operation with Arctic Trucks, Iceland (provided vehicles, drivers and technical support) and Roadscanners Oy, Finland (provided hardware, software and specialist for training) carried out a test of a radar system on a glacier in Iceland. The test of the equipment and training were a success. The experiment demonstrated the reliability of real-time crevasse detection.
We believe that a radar systems will become a standard tool for safer navigation on the glaciers of Antarctica.
